Behind and before every vocation to the priesthood or to the consecrated life there is always the strong and intense prayer of someone: a grandmother, a grandfather, a mother, a father, a community…. This is why Jesus said: “Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest,” that is, God the Father, “to send out laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38). Vocations are born in prayer and from prayer; and only through prayer can they persevere and bear fruit. I am pleased to stress this today, which is the “World Day of Prayer for Vocations.”
Let us invoke the intercession of Mary who is the Woman of the “yes”. Mary said “yes” throughout her life! She learned to recognize Jesus’ voice from the time when she carried him in her womb. May Mary, our Mother, help us to know Jesus’ voice better and better and to follow it, so as to walk on the path of life!

Homily for Seminarians, Novices, and Those Discerning Their Vocations, July 7, 2013
Dear seminarians, dear novices, dear young people discerning your vocations. One of you, one of your formators, said to me the other day, “evangeliser, on le fait à genoux” “evangelization is done on one’s knees.” Listen well: “evangelization is done on one’s knees.” Without a constant relationship with God, the mission becomes a job. But for what do you work? As a tailor, a cook a priest, is your job being a priest, being a sister? No. It is not a job, but rather something else. The risk of activism, of relying too much on structures, is an ever-present danger. If we look towards Jesus, we see that prior to any important decision or event he recollected himself in intense and prolonged prayer. Let us cultivate the contemplative dimension, even amid the whirlwind of more urgent and heavy duties. And the more the mission calls you to go out to the margins of existence, let your heart be the more closely united to Christ’s heart, full of mercy and love. Herein lies the secret of pastoral fruitfulness, of the fruitfulness of a disciple of the Lord!

In the family, faith accompanies every age of life, beginning with childhood: children learn to trust in the love of their parents. This is why it is so important that within their families parents encourage shared expressions of faith which can help children gradually to mature in their own faith. Young people in particular, who are going through a period in their lives which is so complex, rich and important for their faith, ought to feel the constant closeness and support of their families and the Church in their journey of faith. We have all seen, during World Youth Days, the joy that young people show in their faith and their desire for an ever more solid and generous life of faith. Young people want to live life to the fullest. Encountering Christ, letting themselves be caught up in and guided by his love, enlarges the horizons of existence, gives it a firm hope which will not disappoint. Faith is no refuge for the fainthearted, but something which enhances our lives. It makes us aware of a magnificent calling, the vocation of love. It assures us that this love is trustworthy and worth embracing, for it is based on God’s faithfulness which is stronger than our every weakness. (n. 53)

Detrás y antes de toda vocación al sacerdocio o a la vida consagrada, está siempre la oración fuerte e intensa de alguien: de una abuela, de un abuelo, de una madre, de un padre, de una comunidad He aquí porqué Jesús dijo: «Rogad, pues, al Señor de la mies —es decir, a Dios Padre— para que mande trabajadores a su mies» (Mt 9, 38). Las vocaciones nacen en la oración y de la oración; y sólo en la oración pueden perseverar y dar fruto. Me complace ponerlo de relieve hoy, que es la «Jornada mundial de oración por las vocaciones».
Invoquemos la intercesión de María que es la Mujer del «sí». María dijo «sí», toda su vida. Ella aprendió a reconocer la voz de Jesús desde que le llevaba en su seno. Que María, nuestra Madre, nos ayude a reconocer cada vez mejor la voz de Jesús y a seguirla, para caminar por el camino de la vida.

Queridos seminaristas, queridas novicias y queridos novicios, queridos jóvenes en el camino vocacional. Uno de ustedes, uno de sus formadores, me decía el otro día: évangéliser on le fait à genoux, la evangelización se hace de rodillas. Óiganlo bien: “la evangelización se hace de rodillas”. ¡Sean siempre hombres y mujeres de oración! Sin la relación constante con Dios la misión se convierte en función. Pero, ¿en qué trabajas tú? ¿Eres sastre, cocinera, sacerdote, trabajas como sacerdote, trabajas como religiosa? No. No es un oficio, es otra cosa. El riesgo del activismo, de confiar demasiado en las estructuras, está siempre al acecho. Si miramos a Jesús, vemos que la víspera de cada decisión y acontecimiento importante, se recogía en oración intensa y prolongada. Cultivemos la dimensión contemplativa, incluso en la vorágine de los compromisos más urgentes y duros. Cuanto más les llame la misión a ir a las periferias existenciales, más unido ha de estar su corazón a Cristo, lleno de misericordia y de amor. ¡Aquí reside el secreto de la fecundidad pastoral, de la fecundidad de un discípulo del Señor!

53. En la familia, la fe está presente en todas las etapas de la vida, comenzando por la infancia:los niños aprenden a fiarse del amor de sus padres. Por eso, es importante que los padres cultiven prácticas comunes de fe en la familia, que acompañen el crecimiento en la fe de los hijos. Sobre todo los jóvenes, que atraviesan una edad tan compleja, rica e importante para la fe, deben sentir la cercanía y la atención de la familia y de la comunidad eclesial en su camino de crecimiento en la fe. Todos hemos visto cómo, en las Jornadas Mundiales de la Juventud, los jóvenes manifiestan la alegría de la fe, el compromiso de vivir una fe cada vez más sólida y generosa. Los jóvenes aspiran a una vida grande. El encuentro con Cristo, el dejarse aferrar y guiar por su amor, amplía el horizonte de la existencia, le da una esperanza sólida que no defrauda. La fe no es un refugio para gente pusilánime, sino que ensancha la vida. Hace descubrir una gran llamada, la vocación al amor, y asegura que este amor es digno de fe, que vale la pena ponerse en sus manos, porque está fundado en la fidelidad de Dios, más fuerte que todas nuestras debilidades.
