Fr. Jacob Bertrand was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Diego, CA in 2010 on the feast of the Sacred Heart. He is currently pastor of Santa Sophia Parish in East County San Diego. He received his bachelor’s in philosophy from the University of San Diego and did his post graduate studies in Rome while living at the North American College and studying at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). He also received a master’s in spiritual theology during this time. Rev. Bertrand felt the invitation from the Lord to pursue the priesthood while at World Youth Day in 2002 at Toronto. Hearing St. John Paul II’s preaching and challenge to ‘never settle for anything less the highest ideas in your life’ motivated him to give God more room in His life to see if He was calling him to be a priest.
He is passionate about helping young men discern the call to priesthood, building a culture of vocations at his parish, and restoring dignity to the image of Christ’s priesthood. He founded an apostolate called the Oblates of Merciful Love, which both prays for reparation of the sins of priests and seeks to increase knowledge of and zeal for the spiritual life amongst the laity.
